Nvidia’s Rubin, the successor to the Blackwell chips that powered the AI boom’s first years, is in full production, with volume shipments slated for the second half of 2026. The headline numbers are the kind only engineers love: 336 billion transistors, 288 gigabytes of the newest memory, fifty petaflops of low-precision compute per chip, racks that deliver 3.6 exaflops. The question people actually ask is simpler: is this a game changer for “AI tokens”?

That phrase means two different things, and the answer differs for each. For the tokens that AI models produce, the units of text and code that cost money to generate, Rubin is a straightforward step down in cost, which matters enormously. For the crypto tokens branded around AI, the picture is more complicated and mostly less flattering. This article takes both, and then the third thing a Malaysian trader cares about: what Rubin does to the NASDAQ 100.

📌 Key points

  • Rubin is a generational step: a new chip on a finer process, a new memory standard and a new rack design, together aimed at serving AI models, the “inference” workload, far more cheaply per output.
  • For AI tokens in the LLM sense, that means cheaper and faster: every drop in the cost of generating a token widens what AI can be used for. That is the real game changer, and it is gradual, not sudden.
  • For crypto “AI tokens”, the effect is mixed. Cheaper centralised compute undercuts the thesis that decentralised networks will supply AI’s computing power. Those coins trade on Nvidia’s narrative but do not own its economics.
  • For the NASDAQ, Nvidia is one of the heaviest weights in the index, and its earnings nights move the NAS100 more than most Fed decisions. Rubin’s ramp is the thing those nights are about for the next year.
  • Shipments in volume are promised for this half; as of writing, independent confirmation of deliveries at scale was not yet available. Trade the facts as they arrive, not the roadmap.

What Rubin is

Nvidia names its chip generations after scientists. Hopper powered the first wave in 2023, Blackwell the second from late 2024, and Rubin, named for the astronomer Vera Rubin, is the third. It is not one chip but a platform: the Rubin graphics processor, built on TSMC’s 3-nanometre process with 336 billion transistors; the Vera central processor with 88 custom Arm cores; a new generation of the NVLink interconnect that joins them; and the rack, the Vera Rubin NVL144, that packs dozens of them into a single system capable of about 3.6 exaflops of low-precision inference.

The two numbers that matter most are memory and bandwidth. Each Rubin GPU carries 288 gigabytes of HBM4 memory at about 13 terabytes a second. Serving a large AI model is limited less by raw arithmetic than by how fast the chip can move the model’s weights in and out of memory; more memory and faster memory are what let one chip serve more users, faster, for less.

Nvidia said at the start of 2026 that Rubin was in full production, with volume shipments targeted for the second half of the year. Rubin Ultra, a further step, is slated for the second half of 2027. As at the time of writing, Nvidia’s guidance still pointed to this half, and independent confirmation of large-scale customer deliveries had not yet appeared. That timing is the thing to watch.

AI tokens, the first meaning: the cost of a word

When an AI model answers you, it generates text in pieces called tokens, roughly three-quarters of a word each. Every token costs computing time, and therefore electricity and chips. The price AI companies charge per million tokens has fallen dramatically since 2023, and each new chip generation is the main reason.

Rubin’s job is to push that further. More memory per chip means fewer chips per model; faster memory and interconnect mean more tokens per second per chip; lower-precision arithmetic that the new design is built for means each token takes less energy. The combination is a lower cost per token at every layer, from the cloud provider to the application to you.

That is the game changer, and it is quieter than the headline. Each halving of the cost of a token makes a new category of use viable: agents that run all day, assistants in every app, models serving millions of users at once. It is why cloud providers keep ordering, why Johor keeps building data centres, and why the payment story we covered elsewhere, machines paying machines, is arriving now. Rubin does not create the boom. It lowers the price of continuing it.

AI tokens, the second meaning: the crypto coins

A separate set of assets borrows the name: cryptocurrencies branded around artificial intelligence. Some run marketplaces where owners of idle graphics cards rent them out for AI work; some are networks of AI agents that pay each other in the token; some are simply AI-themed. They have been among the market’s most volatile assets, rising hard whenever Nvidia or AI is in the news and falling harder when attention moves.

Is Rubin a game changer for them? Mostly not in the way holders hope.

  • Cheaper centralised compute is a headwind for decentralised compute. The thesis behind GPU-rental tokens is that AI will be starved of computing power and will pay a premium to a distributed network. Every Rubin rack that ships to a hyperscaler makes centralised compute cheaper and more available, which narrows that premium. The decentralised networks also mostly run older, consumer-grade cards, not Rubin.
  • The narrative link is real; the economic link is weak. These coins move with Nvidia’s news because traders use them as a leveraged proxy for the AI theme. But Nvidia’s revenue goes to Nvidia. Owning an AI-branded coin gives you exposure to the mood about AI, not to its cash flows.
  • Agent-to-agent payment is a genuine use case, and stablecoins are winning it. When software needs to pay software, the rail that has actually grown is the dollar stablecoin, not AI-branded tokens. Our companion article on AI and crypto payments covers the numbers.

The honest summary: Rubin is good for the people who sell AI compute and the people who buy it, and ambiguous to negative for tokens whose value depends on compute staying scarce.

What it means for the NASDAQ 100

This is the part a Malaysian trader can act on. Nvidia is one of the largest weights in the NASDAQ 100, alongside Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Broadcom, and the AI theme runs through all of them. On Nvidia’s quarterly results nights, the NAS100 routinely moves more than on a Fed decision, and the whole index can gap on its guidance.

For the next year, those nights are about Rubin: whether volume shipments arrive on the promised schedule, what the margins look like on a 3-nanometre chip with new memory, and whether the cloud providers’ spending plans hold. Three practical rules follow:

  1. Know the date. Nvidia reports in late February, May, August and November, after the US close, which is early morning in Malaysia. Its next results are due in late November 2026. Treat those mornings like FOMC night: flat or small, no stops near the market.
  2. Read the guidance, not the beat. Nvidia beats expectations almost every quarter; the move comes from the forecast for the next one and from any change to the Rubin timeline.
  3. Trade the index, not the story. The NASDAQ 100 is where this cycle is priced, with the liquidity and regulation a beginner needs. That is the market Global Index Mastery is built around, and understanding why it moves on a chip announcement is the Understand stage in practice.

FAQ

What is Nvidia Rubin?

Nvidia’s next chip platform after Blackwell: a 3-nanometre GPU with 336 billion transistors and 288 GB of HBM4 memory, a new Vera CPU, and racks delivering about 3.6 exaflops of low-precision inference. It entered full production at the start of 2026 with volume shipments targeted for the second half.

Is Rubin shipping yet?

Nvidia’s guidance is for volume shipments in the second half of 2026. As at the time of writing, independent confirmation of large-scale customer deliveries had not appeared. Its late-November results should clarify.

Will Rubin make AI cheaper?

Yes, per token: more memory, faster memory and lower-precision arithmetic reduce the cost of generating each unit of AI output. That lowering of cost is the real game changer, and it compounds with every generation.

Is Rubin good for AI crypto tokens?

Mostly not. Cheaper centralised compute undercuts the case for decentralised GPU networks, and AI-branded coins track Nvidia’s narrative without sharing its revenue. Treat them as the most volatile corner of a volatile market.

How does Nvidia affect the NASDAQ 100?

It is one of the index’s heaviest weights, and its results nights move the NAS100 more than most macro events. The next results are due in late November 2026, after the US close.

Summary

Rubin is a generational step built to serve AI models more cheaply: a 3-nanometre chip with far more and faster memory, a new CPU and interconnect, and racks at 3.6 exaflops, in production with volume shipments promised for this half. For AI tokens in the model sense, it lowers the cost of every generated token, which is the real and gradual game changer that keeps the boom going. For crypto AI tokens it is mixed to negative, because cheaper centralised compute undercuts the decentralised-compute thesis and those coins track the narrative without the revenue. For the NASDAQ 100, Nvidia’s results nights, the next in late November, are where Rubin’s ramp will be priced, and the index, not the token, is where a Malaysian trades it.
